Tick and Flea Control in Southwest Florida
Today For Your
Brown Dog Tick
The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick found in Naples and Fort Myers. Ticks can be a serious problem and can cause major health problems if allowed to infest your living area. However, the Brown Dog Tick is not known to vector any disease, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
It's important to understand that ticks are not an insect but are closely related to spiders. Adult ticks have 8 legs; insects only have 6 legs. All ticks are parasitic and feed on the blood of animals. Most ticks spend the majority of their life on or near the ground waiting for a suitable host to come by on which to attach themselves. Ticks will climb onto an appropriate object, such as a tall blade of grass, bush, fence post, or side of a building to wait for a host to pass by.
One interesting fact about Brown Dog Ticks is that they can live for as long as 200 days without a blood meal. Yikes! And the female Brown Dog Tick can lay a mass of 1000 to 3000 eggs. With these numbers, it doesn't take long for them to infest the inside of your home. Although they are called Brown Dog Ticks, they can be found on a variety of animals and will even occasionally host on humans.
If you find a tick attached to you or a family member never just pull it off the skin. A tick is easily removed by first touching the tick with a warm butter knife or alcohol to get it to remove its head from the skin. Then grab the tick and lift it off the skin.
