Eastern Subterranean Termites in Florida
Flying Termites in Florida
Facts, Identification, & Control

The most common termite found here in Southwest Florida is the Eastern Subterranean Termite. As their name suggests, these termites are cryptic in nature. It is not uncommon for activity to go unnoticed. That is because these termites enter your home from underground where the soil meets your house. However, their annual flights of subterranean termite swarmers or flying termites cause people to quickly recognize that they may have activity.

Eastern Subterranean Termites swarmers are brown to black in color and have wings. Their wings have visible vines around the front end. These flying termites often come inside homes due their attraction to lights such as your television screen. However, most of the time, these swarmers are found dead near a window. Soldiers of the Eastern Subterranean Termite have a much smaller oval shaped head than that of Drywood Termites.

Subterranean termites are known for their tunnel like feeding sites beneath or, in some cases, above the soil. Most subterranean termite colonies can have up to 1,000,000 termites. These termites enter homes through small cracks or crevices in the foundation. They may also build mud tubes to enter your structure.  Much like other species of termites and wood destroying organisms, subterranean termites prefer to consume cellulose and wood materials. One indication of wood damage is bubbling or peeling of paint just on the surface of wood. This especially true with baseboards inside your home or business.

A great way to prevent these termites from entering your home and causing damage is by keeping the soil and mulch pulled back away from your structure. Other areas of your home to inspect and correct are plumbing leaks, moisture issues, air conditioning condensation build up, dead trees around your home, heavy vegetation around the exterior of your home, and any other structural defects that conducive to termite feeding/activity.
