Big Headed Ants in Florida
Big Headed Ant in Florida
Facts, Identification, & Control

Big-Headed Ants are often misidentified and confused with a fire ant worker. They are yellow to reddish brown in color and have a three-section club antenna. The Big-Headed Ant has two distinct sizes of workers. A major worker, which is a soldier, defends the colony and a minor worker forages for the colony. The major workers have an exceptionally large head in proportion to their bodies which gives them the name Big Headed Ants. The minor workers look like other types of ants except for the antennas which have 12 segments. Big Headed Ants have a stinger much like other ants, but they typically do not extend it at all times.

These ants have multiple queens and are more common and come inside homes and business easily. These ants are classified as a structural pest here in Southwest Florida. Although they can easily come inside, they generally prefer to live outdoors. Big Headed Ants take over massive areas at a time. If you find Big-Headed Ants in your lawn, chances are the entire neighborhood has them. The level of activity will vary from place to place. Big Headed Ants usually nest in the soil, in protected locations under rocks, logs, firewood, patio blocks, landscape timbers, and various types of debris. They also form huge, extended colonies called “Super Colonies”. New colonies are primarily formed by mid-summer flights or flying ants. However, budding may occur with the large multi-queen colonies. As we begin our control of Big-Headed Ants, they may form large piles of dead colony members along baseboards and under carpeting inside your home.

Big Headed Ants prefer to feed on live and dead insects, honeydew produced by aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects. Once these ants get inside a home, they prefer protein rich foods such as meats and peanut butter, pet foods, kids’ snacks, and will also feed upon sweets and fruits.
